Page 1 of 1 FIRE RISK ASSESSMENT POLICY AND GUIDANCE 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 came into force in 2006. It introduced the need for employers, building owners and occupiers to have a greater understanding of fire safety and nominate a "responsible person" to ensure compliance. The responsible person at WATMOS shall be the Chief Executive. 1.2 The responsible person is required to: Carry out or nominate someone to carry out a fire risk assessment identifying the risks and hazards. Consider who may be especially at risk. Eliminate or reduce the risk from fire as far as is reasonably practical and provide general fire precautions to deal with any residual risk. Take additional measures to ensure fire safety where flammable or explosive materials are used or stored. Create a plan to deal with any emergency and document the findings. 1.3 Similar risk assessment principles apply to Fire Risk Assessment as those for General Safety Risk Assessment (see Safety Risk Assessment Policy). WATMOS will ensure that the following five step process is followed: Identify fire hazards: - Sources of ignition. - Sources of fuel. - Sources of oxygen. Identify people at risk - People in and around the premises. - People especially at risk. Evaluate, remove, reduce and protect from risk. - Evaluate the risk of a fire occurring. - Evaluate the risk to people from fire. - Remove or reduce fire hazards. - Remove or reduce the risks to people (detection and warning, fire-fighting, escape routes, lighting, signs and notices, maintenance). Record, plan, inform, instruct and train - Record significant findings and action taken. - Prepare an emergency plan. - Inform and instruct relevant people. Co-operate and co-ordinate with others. - Provide training. Review - Keep assessment under review and revise where necessary. 1.4 The fire risk assessment questionnaire is available from the Human Resources Manager.
