Page 1 of 4 FIRST AID AT WORK POLICY 1. AIMS 1.1 To demonstrate a commitment to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all employees and visitors. Although accidents will occur, WATMOS is dedicated to minimising the effects that such incidents might produce by ensuring that it has appropriate numbers of qualified first aid officer(s). 1.2 To specify the minimum requirements for the delivery of an effective first aid service that will ensure the immediate medical care of people ill or injured on WATMOS’ premises. 1.3 To satisfy all legal requirements as specified by The Health and Safety (First aid) Regulations 1981, and Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (ACOP L74 2009). 2. FIRST AID – DEFINITIONS 2.1 First aid is defined as the provision of treatment for the purposes of preserving life and minimising the consequences of injury or illness until medical help can be obtained. It includes treatment of minor injuries or conditions that do not require the services of a doctor or nurse. 2.2 There are three categories of first aiders:  Basic First Aiders - should be qualified in emergency first aid having attended a basic 1-day training course.  First Aid Officers - these are either nominated or self-nominated with Chief Executive approval, to provide first aid cover for WATMOS. They will have completed a Health and Safety Executive Approved 4-day First Aid at Work course.  Appointed First Aid Officers - An appointed person is someone nominated by the Chief Executive to take charge when someone is injured or falls ill, including calling an ambulance if required and looking after the first-aid equipment e.g. restocking the first-aid box. The appointed person should be available at all times people are at work on site which may mean appointing more than one. 2.3 The following table details the specific training, responsibilities and duties that are applicable to each category of first aider:
