Page 3 of 4 3. WATMOS PROVISION 3.1 It is the responsibility of the Board and Chief Executive: That there are an adequate number of employees trained in first aid for WATMOS. Consideration needs to be given to what level of coverage is appropriate according to the specific risks which exist. To ensure, via the Appointed First Aid Officer, that there are sufficient first aid supplies readily available. To ensure that information relating to first aid arrangements including the location of trained personnel, first aid equipment and facilities is disseminated throughout WATMOS. To ensure, via the Human Resources Manager, the delivery of information about first aid arrangements to new, transferred and temporary employees. 4. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGER 4.1 The Human Resources Manager shall: Procure and organise first aid courses (limited to the Basic, First Aid at Work Certificate and First Aid at Work Certificate Refresher courses). Ensure that the content of the courses meets the standards and regulations of the Health and Safety Executive. Ensure that the trainers and examiners are appropriately qualified and their instruction meets the standards of the HSE. Maintain records of all First Aid at Work trained first aid officers and appointed first aid officers. Ensure that information on first aid arrangements including the location of trained personnel, first aid equipment, and facilities is disseminated throughout WATMOS. Review the performance of courses and the training providers. Review, as necessary, the first aid provision within WATMOS. 5. SELECTION OF FIRST AID OFFICERS 5.1 Employees can nominate themselves, with approval from their line manager and the Chief Executive, for a first-aid training course to enable them to become a first aid officer. However whether self-nominated or nominated there is a personal profile that describes a suitable candidate: Must be readily available. Must be in reasonable health. Must be able to respond to, and cope well in, an emergency situation. Must have good communication skills and a pleasant disposition. Must have the willingness and aptitude to learn new skills. Must be aware of the limitations of the training and know when to call for medical assistance or an ambulance. Must be able to be called away from their work at short notice. Must carry out their duty without prejudice. 5.2 WATMOS may also nominate existing fully qualified first aid officer members of staff to become first aid officers.
